Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC)

NADRA is issuing new Computerized National Identity Cards (CNIC’s) to all Pakistani citizens. The CNIC is a comprehensive identification document that authenticates an individual’s identity as a Pakistani citizen. The CNIC may serve as a proof of identity and enables validated transactions being availed by various social or commercial services across Pakistan.  

Computerized National Identity Cards are being issued to all adult citizens of Pakistan, whereas, existing manual records of National Identity Cards (NIC’s) has been switched over to the computerized database. Eligibility for CNIC


Eligibility for CNIC

Every citizen of Pakistan aged 18 or above is eligible for the CNIC. The registration policy caters for issuance of CNIC to citizen aged 18 years or above and married Females irrespective of their age.

Application Procedure for CNIC

Applicant who wants to make his CNIC has to visit the NADRA Swift Registration Centers known as NSRCs. There are mainly two types of applicants one are those who are making their cards for the first time and are fresh applicants the other one are those who had made their CNICs and they are applying for the second time due to any reason( Duplicate/modification/correction)

What is CNIC?

CNIC (Computerized National Identity card) is Pakistani identity card issued by NADRA to all valid /legitimate Pakistanis of 18 years and above.

To whom NADRA issues CNIC for life time?

NADRA issues CNIC for lifetime to those applicants whose age will be more than 65 years at the time when his CNIC gets expired.

Can a person apply for CNIC from abroad?

No, one cannot apply for CNIC from abroad.

What documents are required from a fresh applicant with no previous registration?

Applicant with no previous registration shall provide Child Birth Registration Certificate (CBRC) or SSC/School leaving certificate or citizenship certificate from MOI and Blood relative’s original CNIC.

A fresh applicant wants to get CNIC but no relative is alive and no CNIC of relative is available what the procedure is?

Any local Pakistani can become guardian for such applicant. Applicant will present Guardianship certificate at NRC. But only Courts can issue such kind of Guardianship certificate.

What documents are required for a CRC holder for a CNIC?

For a CRC holder , applicant needs parents CNICs and CRC for CNIC.

Can anyone present MNIC as a basic document for CNIC?

No, MNIC cannot be presented as a basic document for CNIC.

Can anyone present manual B.FORM as a basic document for CNIC?

What documents a person will provide who wants to change his temporary address?

No documents required.

What documents required for father name change if he is alive or deceased?

If father is alive then father CNIC is required and if deceased then Court decree is needed.

What documents are required for un-natural age clearance in case of twins?

Birth certificates or CBRC or CRC or CNICs.

Is valid Pakistani passport acceptable for age modification in CNIC?

No, valid Pakistani passport is acceptable for age modification in NICOP only not in CNIC.

What documents required for second time age change?

Only Court decree is admissible for second time age change but one year age change relaxation has been granted on provision of SSC/ Service book.

Which additional documents an AHMADI married female shall provide for modification of marital status?

An affidavit of Rs.20 duly attested by the Oath Commissioner is asked from applicants belonging to Ahmadi religion applying for modification of marital status.

A eunuch wants to change his gender to eunuch what documents are required?

No evidence of Gender is asked from a Eunuch.

Who can apply for cancellation of CNIC due to death?

Only blood relative of the deceased can apply for such cancellation.

Can a married female age 14 years apply for CNIC?

No one can apply for CNIC until he/she reaches to the age of 18, no matter if he/she is married or not.

What is Gratis?

NADRA issues CNIC for free as a privilege to persons belong to some special categories like disables, BISP beneficiaries and employees of some government organizations.

What is fee for age modification more than 3 years?

Fee for age modification more than 3 years is 5000 Rupees.

What is fee for DUP clearance when one CNIC was undelivered?

There is no fee for DUP clearance process where the (to be) surrendered CNIC was undelivered.

What is fee for dup clearance when data is same, no transaction made and applicant illiterate?

Fee for such DUP clearance is 1000 Rupees.

What will be fee for CNIC cancellations incase of death?

Fee for CNIC cancellations incase of death is 50 Rupees.

What is fee for renewal of CNIC in normal category?

Fee for renewal of CNIC in normal category is 75 Rupees.

In which category CNIC of a disable person will be processed?

NADRA processes CNIC of a disable person free in Executive category.

How can a resident of AJK remove AJK flag from his CNIC?

AJK residents cannot remove AJK flag from their CNICs.

How can a disable person remove disability logo from his CNIC?

Disability logo cannot be removed from a CNIC.

A person CNIC was marked BLK by NADRA on request of any of Govt organization, how will he remove BLK flag?

NADRA removes BLK in such cases only when that particular Government organization officially sends request to NADRA to remove BLK from CNIC of that person.

Can a person modify his/her CNIC without having modified his/her NICOP first?

Nicop holder cannot modify his/her CNIC directly.Such applicant will modify his/her record through NICOP medication and then will get CNIC of that Modified data through reprint lost apply.

What is SOP for complete name change?

For complete name change applicant must provide an affidavit attested by 1st class Magistrate and advertisement in any two National Daily newspapers. Beside this literate persons can change their names on the basis of Matric Certificate.

What is the SOP for partial name change?

For partial name change applicant only has to apply in Modification. No documents required for partial name change.

What is the SOP for name change due to religion?

For name change due to religion applicant must provide an affidavit attested by 1st class Magistrate, advertisement in any three National Daily newspapers and certificate issued by Registered Religious Institution/Mufti.

A female applicant wants to change her permanent address after marriage as per husband CNIC, what document will she provide?

For permanent address change female applicants need to provide husband CNIC.

A female applicant aged 50 wants to change her marital status, what document will she provide?

Only husband CNIC is required, for female applicant more than 45 years of age Nikkah Nama is not mandatory.

An applicant wants to add “Malik” with his name, what kind of name change it is?

It is partial name change

A person recently converted to Christianity from Islam and wants to modify his religion in CNIC. Write the procedure?

Conversion from Islam to any other religion is not allowed.

How to change MNIC number on CNIC?

Applicant will present his original MNIC.

To update marital status as “married” computerized Nikah Nama is mandatory or not?

Computerized Nikah Nama is not mandatory. Marital status can be updated through Manual Nikah Nama as well.

How to change marital status from married to divorcee?

Applicant will provide Divorce papers/certificate.

Can a person change his deceased mothers name in his CNIC without having a court decree?

No, Court decree is mandatory for such kind of modification.

What is domain change?

Moving upwards from CRC to CNIC or down wards from CNIC to CRC with age modification is called Domain change.
OR
When an applicant wants to modify his age in such a way that if he is a CRC holder, he becomes eligible for CNIC or if he is a CNIC holder, he does not remain eligible for CNIC anymore and jumps down to CRC is called Domain change.

How many kinds of domain change exist?

There are two kinds of domain change i.e. upward domain change (CRC to CNIC) and downward domain change (CNIC to CRC).

What is correction?

Mistakes/rejections that can be corrected from local NRC are called Corrections. Father/ Mother/attester citizen numbers and SI etc.

What is validation?

Those rejections which need DG / RHO recommendations for clearance, are sent to RHO/HQ for approval with documentary proofs are called Validations like DUP and age cases.

Dup cases are dealt by RHO or HQ?

Dup cases are directly dealt by HQ.

If mother and spouse name are same, what procedure be adopted for resolution of such cases?

Such cases are resolved through validation.

Can wrong dup cases be cleared from local NRCs?

No, wrong DUP cases cannot be cleared from local NRCs. For wrong DUP clearance NRC launches a complaint, such complaint accompanied by DM recommendation letter is sent to RHO. At RHO the NFC thoroughly checks the case and then along with GM recommendations the case is forwarded to ODD at HQ, where final decision is taken.

Applicant record is blocked due to applicant father /mother marital status is unmarried. How to resolve?

First applicant’s father/mother will update his/her marital status from unmarried to married after that the case will be replayed.

Is DUP clearance possible from abroad?

Yes.

How an alien can get CNIC whose spouse belongs to Pakistan?

An alien whose spouse belongs to Pakistan can get POC but not CNIC.

Does NADRA provide home delivery facility for CNIC?

Yes, NADRA provides home delivery facility for CNIC where TCS service is available.

When CNIC is delivered to NRC, how long does it lye at NRC?

When CNIC is delivered to NRC, It lies there for six months and after six months send back to HQ for destruction.

Can CNIC be used as a travel document like NICOP?

No, CNIC is not a travel document.

What is valid age difference between siblings?

Age difference between siblings must not be less than 7 months.

What is the time limit for correction of office mistakes?

Corrections in Office mistake Category will only be entertained within three month of the issuance date.

Can a gazetted officer attest his own form?

A gazetted officer cannot attest his own form.

Can CNIC be printed without taking a picture?

Yes, but it is allowed for females only.

What is the maximum and minimum age difference between father and children and between mother and children?

Valid age difference between father and children is minimum 16 years and maximum 60 years while difference between mother and children is minimum 14 years and maximum 50 years.

Can I write Mr. , Mrs. or a designation like doctor etc .With my name in CNIC?

Mr. , Mrs. or any designation can’t be printed on CNIC.

Can an applicant add his alias in his CNIC?

Yes, Alias can be printed on CNIC.

What is Dup swapping?

After DUP clearance when an applicant wants to get back his surrendered CNIC number and to surrender the existing CNIC number. A request is sent to RHO from NRC to reactivate applicant’s surrendered CNIC number. When the surrendered CNIC is reactivated both CNICs(existing and reactivated) are marked DUP once again so that the applicant could get back the desired number and surrender the unwanted CNIC number. But for this purpose the applicant needs to go through DUP clearance process again.

Note: CNIC is distructed after six months if applicant did not collect it. 

         After 56 year of age applicant get's CNIC without expiry date.
